Day 15: Dead Plants Don’t Do Much for the Atmosphere

Today is Day 15 of the 30 Days to Less Stuff and More Life Challenge. If you want to jump in, go get the book at Amazon, Simple Living – 30 days to less stuff and more life.

We’re half way through!!  Are you keeping up?  Are you enjoying the exercises and tips?  I am.  I have a long way to go, though.  So, let’s keep going.

Lorilee admits she might not have a green thumb.  I’m right there with her.  I keep a few plants gasping for breath around me, but I don’t have any of those thriving, green bushy plants.  I know alot of tricks to nurturing plants, it’s just not in my nature to nurture them too much.  Seriously, I can kill a cactus and have on more than once occasion.  So, I’ve mostly given up on having too many plants in my house.  It’s kind of depressing when they die, which they do with great frequency.

She goes a step further with dead plants, though.  What about all the things you keep around just because?  Because to admit you’re not good or truely interested in something would be like saying you’re not the person you think people expect you to be.  That’s the hardest part of minimizing, I think, shedding the you that everyone else sees and showing the you that you want to be.  But it’s a vital step if you are going to find fulfillment without all the things that make you look successful.

I have held on to things, such as craft supplies, because I think a good homeschool mom should do craft projects.  But the fact of the matter is that I don’t have time and can’t stand the mess.  So, I’ve cleaned out my craft cabinet.  I keep a few basic things that the girls can do on their own, because they enjoy coloring and making things, such as cards.

I also admit that I have other things hanging around in storage, such as canning equipment and a sewing machine.  I find value in having them, whether I use them regularly or not.  If I thought we were never going to move into a bigger, more accommodating space, I would consider getting rid of them.  But for now, I’ll hang on to them and think of them as dormant plants, instead of dead ones.

What dead plants, planted or otherwise, might you have that should be tossed?
