Before I began organizing my pantry, everything was kind of shoved into every nook and cranny where it would fit. I had to unload a whole shelf to find one item. The depth of the shelves contributes to this disorganization dilemma, however, I can still do a better job of keeping stuff I use a lot within easy access.
I started out by pulling out almost everything and wiping down the shelves. Then, I regrouped things, like all the canned goods, all the flours, all the breads, etc. Stuff I use only occasionally was moved to the back of the shelves or near the top of the pantry, depending on what it was. Things I need to use quickly or use often were put at eye level and in the front. Admittedly, eye level for me is quite a bit lower than for most people. But, I’m the one doing most of the cooking, so it’s my way or the highway.
I only found a few things that needed to be chunked, and I was able to find some things with which I can use in meals. We are in the planning stages to move, so I need to use up as much of our surplus as I can to avoid moving it. Call me lazy, but I beg to differ. Our next temporary abode is likely to have less storage space than I have here, so the more we use now the less I have to find a place for in a few weeks.
Do you have a place you need to organize? What is your plan of attack?
